THE EARTH.

As far as we know the Earth is the only planet to harbor life. Fossils and chemical evidence show that life existed on Earth as far back as 3.5 billion years ago. Life on Earth has profoundly changed the planet and its climate.

INTERIOR STRUCTURE: The Earth is the most geologically active planet in the solar system. It has around 12 tectonic plates that slowly move, powered by the convective heat transfer from the mantle layer. Note that layers in the core diagram are not to scale.

This animated map of Earth shows changes in Arctic sea ice and vegetation throughout the seasons. Each frame in the GIF shows one month out of the year. The map is made using open data from NASA, USGS, and Natural Earth.
