Astronaut John W. Young, commander of Apollo 16, is captured mid-leap saluting the US flag on the lunar surface at the Descartes landing site during the mission's first extravehicular activity (EVA). This iconic photograph was taken by lunar module pilot, Charles M. Duke Jr. To the left stands the Lunar Module “Orion,” with the Lunar Roving Vehicle parked beside it. Partially obscured in the LM’s shadow is the Far Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph. The imposing Stone Mountain serves as the backdrop to this moment. While Young and Duke explored the Descartes highlands on the moon, astronaut Thomas K. Mattingly II orbited above in the Command and Service Modules “Casper.”
